Brief comments
Cutups: inspired by the cubist movement, this was a duet "danced" between a solo dancer and projected images of his pre-filmed dance... with a voiceover by William Burroughs (?) explaining cut-up techniques as applied to the written and spoken word. *whap* Those Beat writers keep hammering at me from unexpected directions!
Blind Spot: three dancers and a venetian blind. Only two visible and dancing at any one time. Unison, synchrony, influence and dissonance ebb and flow along with the forming, breaking and reforming duets.
Tui: brilliant rendition of interplay between an alpha male and a subordinate. Had the choreographer seen Ballet Rambert's work based on Mick Jagger, I wonder? That strut! The program cites "human equivalents of animal mating contestation", and it delivered that in a delightfully funny/real way. Flashes of indolent lions, watchful mongeese, preening birds; never losing sight of the pecking order. A funny exchange with two berets - one with a top-knot and tail, and one without.
Happy Helleborus: friends?
Most impressive dancer of the afternoon: Paul White. I note from the program that he's trained in classical ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, tap, theatre and acrobatics. Maybe that explains his incredible strength, flexibility AND projection.
